James Robert McCrimmon (Jamie, or even Wee Jimmy, to his friends)* was a piper of the Clan McLaren, like his father Donald, and grandfather, and was present at the Battle of Culloden on the cold, sleet strewn afternoon of April 16, 1746, and met the roaming renegade Time Lord, known only as the Doctor, soon after the final throws of the fight.
Very little is known of Jamie’s life before meeting the Doctor: even his age is mere speculation, some saying early twenties, others late teens. But what is known is that he became a trusted and loyal member of the TARDIS crew, having proved himself during the struggles that followed the bloody defeat of the Clans at Culloden.
Jamie always seemed ready, willing and certainly able, for each new adventure, and rarely daunted by what faced him, even if he didn’t fully understand what was going on (but then, the Doctor didn’t always understand at first either). His sharp intelligence showed itself over and over again, as he quickly adapted to each new setting and circumstance, following the Doctor (in most cases) with total dedication, even if he thought the Doctor had lost the plot once in a while. He was very practical of mind too, often spotting the mundane flaws in a plan long before those around him, despite their more sophisticated lives and education: I mean, what was the use of Zoe’s fancy calculations of rocket flight worth if they only had three days’ supply of food and water!
Fearless or blind stupidity, take your pick, but what you could always rely on was Jamie stepping in to physically defend both the Doctor and fellow companions. But he also had his own morals and, when the Doctor seemed to have forgotten his, Jamie wouldn’t hold back in making his thoughts known, adding to the complete honesty of their relationship. And when faced with the loss of a fellow companions (particularly Victoria), Jamie was quite open in his sadness too.
*a fictional character played by Frazer Hines (and, Hamish Wilson) in the BBC science fiction drama “Doctor Who”.
