I was having a natter in 'chat' with John Smith last night (as you do), and we briefly touched on what age we thought Jamie might have been at the time he met with the Doctor.
John Smith and I were with a year of each other's guess.
So... how old do you think Jamie was?

I asked the same question when I started writing my fan fictions for Jamie. Some people told me he was 17 years old, one even said he was fifteen, and some say he's in his early twenties. In most of my stories, I kept him 17 and in one I made him 22 because that's the age (Uncle)Frazer was when he started the show. Another good question is how old was he in his last episode? We don't really know how long Jamie traveled with the Doctor before he had to go home. Unless the Time Lords somehow aged him back to the age he was before he left. (It also explains why he looks older in season 6B.)

I've always thought about 16/17 - I also joke that the change in costume style for Seeds is due to the Doctor and Zoe taking Jamie out the night before to celebrate his 18th... (or the fact he wasn't killed off by the Krotons and replaced)... Personally, I don't think the character was anywhere near the actor's real age. If Jamie had been in his twenties, I'm sure he would have been quite a 'hardened Highlander' by April 1746... but he's not. We almost see him grow up before us... we certainly see him 'discover' women, and the knock-backs he gets when he tries to 'act like a man'. And as sporan says: as he grows up, his socks go down. Also, nearer the end of his travels with the Doctor, he seems to look for approval less, and act with more confidence.

In Jamie's time people aged differently. 16 or 17 would be more like someone in their 20's now, wouldn't you think?

Not necessarily .... They married quite late, so stayed within the family unit for pretty much the same amount of years as now. They may have been out to work at an earlier age, but I think 'kids of today' grow up much faster.
... but that's just an opinion.

i dunno why but I always thought Jamie was about 19 when he began travelling with the doc. I think its because that innocence Jamie has goes with that age maybe? But in one of my fics he kind of gets with a 26 year old... thats a bit.... bad. lol!!

I was listening to an audio drama about Jamie today, they said he was 20 when he joined the doctor, only just though.
